Diagnostic test & scan preparation checklist

Ask the diagnostic center in advance

• Do I need to fast? If so, for how many hours, and can I drink water?
• Should I take my usual medicines on the day? (Check with your doctor if unsure)
• Is an appointment needed, and how long will the test take?
• When and how will I receive the report?
• What is the cost, and is a doctor’s requisition slip required?

Tell the staff if you

• Are or might be pregnant
• Have allergies, especially to contrast dye, iodine, or latex
• Have a pacemaker, metal implant, or other device (important for MRI)
• Have kidney problems or diabetes
• Feel anxious in enclosed spaces

On the day

• Bring the requisition slip, ID, and previous reports for comparison
• Wear comfortable clothing without metal zips or buttons
• Leave jewellery at home
• Arrange transport if you may be given sedation
